The United Way – Improving Lives LocallyPosted November 7, 2017 by Diana Sterenberg
Like all charities in Canada, Chalmers Community Services Centre depends on a variety of funding sources to be able to carry out its mandate – private and corporate donations, foundations, church outreach and discretionary funds, service clubs, trades unions, fundraising events.
The single largest source of funds to CCSC is the United Way of Guelph-
Wellington-Dufferin. United Way funds have traditionally been awarded on a
three-year basis which means there is a certainty about these dollars, providing
assurance that the moneys will be remitted each and every month for three
years. The United Way provides almost 20% of Chalmers’ annual operating
We are currently in the middle of the United Way’s 2017 campaign which ends on
December 20th and CCSC is very much involved in the campaign. So far this fall we
have had tours of our downtown facility by representatives of Linamar and
Sleemans. These folks get to see how UW funds are being put to use and will go
back to their workplaces to spread the word and help organize their internal
corporate campaigns. I have been invited to speak at the University of Guelph and
Macneill Laboratories (twice) about CCSC’s work and the importance of UnitedWay in the community in general and Chalmers in particular.
The United Way’s purpose is to “improve lives locally”. They do this by focusing
on three primary areas:
- All That Kids Can Be
- From Poverty to Possibility
- Strong Communities
United Way also organizes ‘Days of Caring’ when corporate members take a day
out of their work schedules to assist agencies with a specific project. This year, a
team of eight Bank of Montreal employees worked in the Guelph community
orchard at Harcourt United church. This orchard supplies some of its fruit to CCSC.
Their labour was much appreciated and also increased awareness of the work
which Chalmers does in the community.
All those associated with Chalmers are deeply grateful for the tremendous
support we receive from United Way. Their fundraising efforts on our behalf
enable us to devote more of our energy to serving the ever-increasing number of
guests we see at both our West and Downtown locations.
